This item is the surface you put makeup on, not the back of your hand. I bought this for blending foundations after seeing it on a beauty blog. Unfortunately it didn't have the little "wells"/dimples to keep your mixture balanced like I saw on the beauty blog, so my excess product was just spread out and dried up when I next used it . . Even with plastic wrap. I also found that the mixing spatula was too narrow and not flexible enough. Sad. I wasted my money but it was my fault because the ad for this house didn't include these fountains. It was also very expensive for what it is and comes with a bulky silicone "band" case which makes it tiring to use every time.
