Review on πŸ” Discover Odie's Oil - The Ultimate Universal Solution in a 9oz Jar by Stephanie Smith

Too hyped and too expensive for what it is

So this material is marketed as a magic elixir that does wonders for wood. It's good stuff for the right job, but not for every project. This is a basic oil based wood finish and the price is at least double what it should be. I have used two bottles of this product on different projects and it works well and I think it even smells nice. It's easy to apply, easy to wipe off, but I felt like some of it never healed. Take the project out into the sun after it has cured for a few days. You will see drops of liquid coming to the surface. Here's something else. I like oily finishes and prefer a 1:1:1 tung:blo:poly blend. Odie's oil didn't impress me, and certainly not at $45+ for a 9 oz. Damn! After two bottles of it something went wrong. I didn't like that it didn't fully heal. Folks, this is old technology and nothing special here. Always be suspicious of crude marketing and "secret" recipes. Odie uses a mixture of hardening oil, non-hardening oil, wax and carrier solvent. Simple ingredients with a big price premium. The big surprise for me was that the part didn't cure. There is mineral oil in there and it will never heal. I do not recommend this product for furniture. You'll end up with a good result, but it'll take a hell of a lot of layers and time. A simple Tung/Blo/Poly blend gives you a superb finish after 3-4 uses (apply, wait 30 minutes, wipe off). Use satin or semi-matt polyester. This gives you a nice oily finish but doesn't build up. I RECOMMEND this product for cutting boards. The chopping board's finish is often a mixture of mineral oil and wax, and the hardening oil gives the chopping board water resistance and durability. It's a great choice for finishing a cutting board or air conditioner. Again, you can find table oil recipes online that can save you a lot of money.
