After carefully reading the instructions that indicated that the contact protective tab on the provided battery needed to be removed, I found there was no tab and the battery wasn't seated. After popping the battery in, the device didn't work. At all. Nothing. Nada. So I replaced the AAA battery with several fresh ones in succession and found that none of them brought the device to life. So much for using a tester to cut down on buying unnecessary batteries. This isn't the solution, just more unrecyclable materials that will end up in the landfill.
