Review on Tailgate Mounting Waterproof 170°Angle Universal by Christopher Gulledge

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good Picture: Car Safety & Security

I gave an average rating because the product is ok but the instructions are terrible. I installed it on a 1999 Ford F350 double cab. The installation took a while, about 3 hours. Mainly because I wanted the camera under the handle as I really needed help hitching the trailer and the notch is way too low. To do this I had to remove the tailgate and drill a hole for the camera and holes to route the camera cable through the tailgate and under the truck bed. PITA Advantages: Picture/picture is good Mirror mounts directly over existing glass mounting plate (this assembly replaces stock mirror. Slightly smaller) Plenty of wiring to get to mirror from truck back door All parts included. required for operation, including the camera. Looks good and factory fitted. Cons: Directions were poor. They don't even discuss that it's an SLR camera. Just refer to the picture as if it were a separate main unit. Actually there was only information about the actual installation of the camera lens and very little about the connection to a mirror. The mirror also has a sensor on the back that seems to indicate it's auto-dimming, but there's nothing hidden in the directions. The wiring I received did not match the wiring shown in the instructions. Rather than cutting small wires to change the orientation of the camera, the kit included a small connector that you removed from the wires. This is normal until you realize that if you let the end hang it can make contact with a metal surface and tip over during use. Small item as I only glued the ends but it would be nice to have a lid that could be replaced to close. Heads up; If you remove the cap from the cable to flip the image, you must turn the device off and back on before it flips the image. Came with a strip of black tape which wasn't used in the instructions so I assumed it was to cover the glass where the wire goes from the mirror to the headliner so you can't see out of the truck. Here's what I found on the wiring. Block to connect to make the camera turn on backwards. A much simpler explanation of what the instructions gave me: Mirror: Red from the camera goes to red on the mirror (this can be tied to a switch so you can activate it for constant viewing instead if you want) Black from mirror to ground, camera: Red from camera lens to power tail light (red wire or red/black wire) Black to ground (either green light or screw on frame). One final note: the image is not widescreen. It is good for trailer connection and backup camera next to the truck.

Pros
  • ★These cameras can be surface mounted. And the image is rotated 180°. This means that this camera can be installed horizontally, for example under the steering wheel. IP67 dust and water resistant, ideal for outdoor use as a reversing system.
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
