If you have an RV that runs on 30 amps you need both. I'm not an electrician so I got concerned when I was told that many RV sites had faulty wiring. I use an expensive surge protector, but I didn't want to damage it by simply plugging it into an outlet. Worse, I didn't want to damage all of the RV's electrical system.
