To be honest I'm not sure if it's a lamp or a filter. However, the old UV lamp burned out and worked fine until it went out. This bulb wouldn't light up and it took me quite a while to fiddle with it before finally plugging it in. It has shut itself off 2-3 times since I bought it, but each time it caught fire slightly when I loosened the bottom of the filter and tapped the base area lightly. Conclusion: Either the UV40 (also bought from Revain, but I did NOT review it because it annoys me with its noise, so the review would be terribly harsh) or the UV40 replacement lamp is "weak". One of them won't last long. When these UV sterilizers work, they do their job well. You can see a noticeable difference in the quality of life of your fish. In my case the discus, which were constantly unwell, were not eating well but were just the opposite about a week after adding this UV40 power filter along with another.
