I usually use Wix or something cheap on a minivan to change the oil filter. This time I ordered K&N 7026 because it had to fit perfectly. I drove the car for 1 day on business and the next day the CEL light on the dashboard came on. I took the car to Autozone and they read the code, it was P06DD - Engine Oil Pressure Control Circuit Stuck. The code is related to the oil pump: Code P06DD - The engine oil pump has seven vanes and a moving element that continuously adjusts the supply of variable oil pressure by varying the pump's displacement. The pump has two adjustable pressure stages controlled by an on/off solenoid valve. The low pressure setting (solenoid on) is approximately 200 kPa (29 psi) and the high pressure setting (solenoid off) is approximately 65 kPa (65 psi). The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) switches the pump between stages depending on engine operating conditions, oil and coolant temperature, speed and load. Under most typical conditions, the pump runs from idle to about 3000 rpm low and switches from low to high between 3000 and 4000 rpm. The maximum engine oil pressure is limited to 1000 kPa (145 psi) by a relief valve. The pressure in the engine's main oil galley can be monitored using a diagnostic device with an oil pressure gauge. The minimum pressure for the engine is 41 kPa (6 psi) under all operating conditions. Any action under such pressure can result in damage to a critical moving part. I started looking at the oil pressure gauge and it looked fine, 87 psi with cold oil and 30-34 with warm oil. The weird thing was that the light would go out if I was only making short trips, as soon as the oil warmed up the light would come back on. I made an appointment with the dealer and made sure the five year old gearbox would cover a replacement if needed. I then discovered the following while reading about it: Possible Causes of Code P06DD: Low Engine Oil Level. Wrong engine oil filter. Insufficient oil pressure due to mechanical failure of the lubrication system. Mechanical engine damage. engine oil pressure sensor. Two-stage oil pump. Well I just changed the filter so replacing the filter with a Chrysler OEM filter is worth the risk. After installing the OEM filter and disconnecting the battery to reset, the CEL code did not come back. I have a feeling the filter is allowing too much flow and not enough back pressure at idle, the sensor reads low idle pressure and the code comes up. Maybe this is too sensitive a T&C function, but still not a working filter for my car.
