Do this by holding a corner with the thumb and forefinger of one hand and the nearest corner with the other hand in the same way. Drag the corners in opposite directions. If I explained everything correctly, you will get two sponges that are twice as thin as the first one. I find them great for cleaning kitchen walls and ceilings before priming and painting. Holding them with both thumbs on one large area and all fingers on the other large area of the sponge allows them to be pulled down the wall, clearing a large swath with each hit. I find they work well when held parallel to the floor and ceiling and at a 45 degree angle to the wall. You only use one corner until it gets dirty. Each whole sponge gives eight long angles and eight short angles when cut in half. Much luck. It's hard for me to put into words, but it's easy once you get the hang of it.
