These dry chemical sponges (rubber but so called because they absorb chemicals?) definitely pick up soot like crazy. Obviously works best on areas like semi-gloss paint on wood. Still works well though, with a bit of work, eggshell painted walls etc. Haven't tried flat painted ceilings yet but I think it will probably be on the verge of failure / needing repainting.

I don't know what I did wrong but they didn't work at all. Not even a little bit. I was trying to get the last of the black smoke out of our chimney. It wasn't much, but enough to cause discoloration. No matter how I cleaned (as instructed in the instructions), nothing happened. My husband even tried it, but to no avail. We landed on a magical Mr Clean eraser and he removed it with no difficulty. We didn't even have to scrub vigorously. Wiped right away.

I used them on the gray areas of the ceiling and they did a good job. In some rooms the ceiling is white again, in others it is still slightly gray. Reasonable Price. These sponges can be split in half, doubling the surface area to be cleaned. Do this by holding a corner with the thumb and forefinger of one hand and the nearest corner with the other hand in the same way. Drag the corners in opposite directions.
