Expensive but does what they say
These dry chemical sponges (rubber but so called because they absorb chemicals?) definitely pick up soot like crazy. Obviously works best on areas like semi-gloss paint on wood. Still works well though, with a bit of work, eggshell painted walls etc. Haven't tried flat painted ceilings yet but I think it will probably be on the verge of failure / needing repainting.
