We've lived in the south for the last 15 years but recently moved to Milwaukee. The house we bought had a dehumidifier that was very noisy and ran constantly. I filled out a helpful calculator on the WE Energies website and found that we are the largest consumer of electricity in our sector. Since we rarely use the oven, our fridge freezer is Energy Star certified, and our tumble dryer runs on natural gas, it was only one person's fault. We bought this unit and I don't know how other reviewers think it should sound, but it is VERY quiet compared to the old unit. I think it will take a few days to get used to (like a wall mounted air conditioner) if you're sleeping in the same room, but it's quieter than a window air conditioner. It didn't last long and runs from time to time to update the humidity on the display but it's energy efficient and we have it in the basement with a drain hose and it works very well. We are very happy with the value for money, performance and looks of this device and would recommend it to anyone looking for such a device.
