Not the best quality, but overall not bad.

Why equip a camera with a fancy signal processor if it can't provide a passable image? It's possible that updated firmware could fix the picture quality, but almost a year and a half after the model was announced, nothing has changed. In all likelihood, it never will be. All the best, then! You shouldn't go wrong with your decision. has certain advantages: Purchased as a birthday present for a younger sibling. The older one was given a Panasonic Lumix FT-10, which is in a similar vein but of a lower quality. The key need was for there to be no removable components, in addition to being impact resistant and watertight. Even though the TG-820 wasn't tested for durability, it appears to be extremely sturdy (according to my engineering assessment). The lever zoom control and timeless design were both highlights (not buttons). Nonetheless, a softer zoom lever would be preferable. Yet this is subjective. USB cable for charging (connects either to a computer or to a regular charger). This is an improvement over the traditional method of removing the battery and charging it separately, but it does come with some drawbacks (see "Cautions"). If you're shooting video, you can use the zoom. The poor image quality is the primary disadvantage of this camera. Ten by fifteen centimeters is fine for printing, but as you zoom in on the intricacies, your eyes start to well up with tears. The image is grainy across the board, even at the lowest ISO setting. The artifacts, oversharpening, and noise are insane. Worst yet, tweaking the sharpness and noise reduction is out of the question. The compression options are Normal and Fine (there are just two!). Add in the dimensions of the photo, too! The first bullets I fired were in Normal mode, and I couldn't believe my eyes. In a call to Fine. The visibility of artifacts has decreased, but they have not vanished. Sounds are also blaring loud and clear. Extensive overshoot. JPEG. I owned a wide variety of cameras, from toy cams to professional-grade DSLRs. When it comes to a 1/2.3" sensor, I know what to expect. I've had better photo quality from soap dishes with 6 megapixel sensors than the TG-820 provides. To put things in perspective, the front-facing camera on an iPhone 4S produces a little better image than the primary camera. The rear-panel joystick lacks professional polish. The manufacturer might have followed the standard fare of cameras and included a push-button control, but they chose to do things their own way. The joystick is generally too difficult to use. Likely so that no inadvertent mouse clicks occur. There's not a lot of juice in the battery. The battery dies rapidly. A spare battery and charger are both available for purchase (though the battery is often charged within the camera). Either charging the camera or using it will prevent the other from happening at the same time. The food selection is average at best. But you'll be okay. I find it annoying to constantly be flipping between modes. I need a one-touch mode switch like the one on the Lumix FT-10.
