While this light's aiming capabilities may not be as reliable as gooseneck lights, there are enough positioning options to suit most situations adequately. The compensating benefit is an extremely bright LED lamp with good spread of light across the work area, covering the field of view at close range (1ft - 2ft). The strong, solid magnets at the base hold up very well (the whole unit is a little heavy with the battery installed), but the fact that the two magnets - smaller round "dots" about 1 inch apart - are permanently attached means that the mounting surface must be as wide as 1-1/2 to 2 inches to securely attach the lantern. I use these almost exclusively in network/server rack-mount scenarios whose frames generally have enough room to mount the device (mostly on vertical surfaces, if only on flat, empty spots on closet-high power strips), and found this lamp as indispensable it frees both hands for installing and removing cables and devices in the tightest of spaces. When routing cables, I move the light around a lot due to the swivel limitations of the light head: it rotates about 90-120 degrees up and down and 180 degrees side to side to expand the lighting range. Light path, it's basically just a matter of changing the mounting direction of the whole block 180 degrees, which then changes the light coverage area. Of course, this device can also be placed on a flat, horizontal surface (even the floor), and there are many ways to do this and still get good lighting for your task. Reversed from the top of the equipment rack? No problem. A NOTICE. As you may have noticed, the battery and charger are only sold separately. Not a cheap investment, but it's a solid device and I've benefited significantly from it in the two or so months that I've had it. Engineered to provide long-lasting performance. The battery was looked at separately and I didn't really monitor the life between charges, but I'd conservatively say that in certain areas I used it about 6 hours a day for 3-4 days without recharging.
