I bought this device to stimulate my daughter (3.5 years old) interest in learning and writing letters and numbers. Some days she really tries to write a letter and some days she just wants to doodle something. A level 1 it cheers you up whatever you write, on level 2 it's harder and she's not ready for it. I think it would be better if Stage 1 admitted that she didn't even try to write the letter and said something like "It's okay, try again". Or something along those lines. But it's a really cool toy and it's helped her get interested in learning. We also practice writing on paper. I like that the pen has grip points to teach you how to hold the pen properly. I think by the time she is 4 she will use it more and hopefully be more willing to try writing. *UPDATE* It's been 4 months of playing and I wanted to do an update. The original batteries still work. My daughter is writing more and more letters and tries very hard, but sometimes she gets frustrated and just writes. Now she can complete level 2, but when she gets frustrated she goes back to level 1. For now she's concentrating on the "simple" letters and numbers and not tackling the more complex ones. But she has come a long way in 4 months! This toy really helped her learn how to hold pencils, crayons, etc. and improve her hand-eye coordination. It is convenient to take it to places where you usually let your child play with a tablet or phone. The audio is loud but probably won't bother people in places like Target or in a doctor's waiting room.
