Review on πŸ”Œ Enhance Your Connectivity with the Tremendous TRENDnet Wireless N 300 Mbps Travel Router Kit, TEW-654TR by Chris Doe

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Internet cable was bad - Worked after about an hour of messing around.

When I first turned it on, the LAN LED only blinked once when I plugged in the included RJ46 cable. Then I found that if I pressed hard on it when I plugged it in, the light would start working, just a little bit. I plugged in an old RJ45 cable and the LAN light was on all the time. It would be hard to understand unless I had an old cable to try. The instructions are not very good. It took me maybe an hour or two of trial and error to get it working as the primary wireless node. I had to do a hard reset once because I couldn't get the master security key to work. I ended up using the (first) WPA Advanced Security Mode, which finally worked. Just enter a simple 8-digit security code. The tew-654tr's speed is very good, about 50% faster than Verizon Wi-Fi (when connected to the Wi-Fi portion of the router). I use OOKLA Speedtest on my iPad Mini to test both wifi sources. Trendnet 35 Mbps versus 18 Mbps on Verizon Wi-Fi (both within a foot of Wi-Fi sources). The range can be half that of Verizon's Wi-Fi, which is to be expected for a device this small. It goes through a wall in our house about 30 feet away. I'm going to a hotel in Kauai next week to see how things are going. Most of the older hotels/cabins that we like to stay in only have wired internet, so we should be in pretty good shape by now. My son's Android phone connects perfectly to the device, as does my iPad with WiFi only.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Annoying
