They are strong enough but I would have preferred two pairs of J hooks instead. With the movable arm in the vertical position, my kayaks cannot tip inwards. I set one up but when I load the second kayak from the other side it tips over the first. I need someone to stand on the other side with their hands up so they don't fall off until I buckle up. Only then will my two kayaks remain in place. Maybe I wouldn't have this problem if the horizontal pieces were wider, but each system is too expensive to just buy another, so I'm stuck with a rack I'm really not happy with. This will probably work well with a boat, but I haven't gone solo yet.
