Press both front and back to rewind the tape smoothly.
A lot of reviews complain that the button on the front of the band doesn't retract smoothly or at all, but the button on mine seems to be on the back. In any case, the best way to get a smooth and fast return transport is to press two fingers front and back at the same time. My tape measure works great, has a smooth and quick return and I like the thin tape for the work I do. It's a handy device and I'll pick up another one to carry around in my purse.
