I did not smell any soldering fumes when this fan was on. I like the flexibility of the hinges and the different mounting options of the device. I opted for side mounting, so I had to tighten the unit a lot or gravity would tip it down a bit. You will need a table edge or edge of at least 2 inches to set properly.
