Good stone. It's not flat enough for the back of the chisel, at least not the entire back. Although it works very well for carving tools. Woodcarving tools apply a lot of pressure to a small area when sharpening, so oilstone, Arkansas, diamond, or ceramic are best choices. Waterstones are too soft for carving tools and score easily. Pottery is faster than Arkansas and a found object than diamond. I hot grown mine by taking a 400 grit atom in one direction. So it became a two-sided stone. The original page is medium and the page I took with Atoma cuts thinner. Probably as good as the wonderful Spyderco. I use my white Spyderco sharpening stone as a guide, which is rated as good. My average workbench lapped just as well with atomic cutting. If you decide to lap, remember that it will take a long time, and rinse the diamond stone under running water all the time. Otherwise the ceramic stone chips/loops/tails will corrode the nickel the diamonds are set in and suddenly your fancy diamond cutter will turn into a piece of steel. One star off for flatness. It's 100% flat enough for sharpening knives, chisels, and carving tools, but not good for initial alignment of chisel backs. I'll take him over the water rocks every day.
