GQ GMC-500+ geiger counter worked very well. I don't have any reference radioisotopes to compare, but background levels were what we expected: 20-25 outdoors during the day and 15-20 indoors at night (Southern California). We have discovered a very unexpected source of radiation. significant radiation in our home thanks to the GMC-500+. We're using a water softener here, and for one reason or another the home owners chose to use potassium salt instead of sodium. Unfortunately, natural sources of potassium can be radioactive. Radiation levels around the potash bags were around 70-100+ CPM, probably because of the potash bags we stored. This is not a "too" dangerous radiation level, but high enough to justify moving the bags. After this unexpected discovery, homeowners are back to using sodium salt in their water softening system after I showed them the readings. Glad we made this accidental discovery as sacks of potassium and salt were kept near where I roosted. The increase in radiation from potassium (K+) in the water after a water softener is negligible. However, the problem lies in storing a large amount of potassium salt near places frequently visited by people. The more potassium, the higher the radiation levels near the bags. Thank you GQ for providing the GMC-500+ affordably and reliably!
