The first impression was that they had a lower bound of zero. Also considering their rider size. Although I was planning on using a subwoofer with them, I wasn't impressed. Left them on my desk and went to bed. The next day I decided to give them a chance. Everything has changed. Sound (no subwoofer) - 3 stars - Treble and mids were good but with a bright side but there are tone controls for that. I dialed the treble down and the bass up and it was "good". After a while they seem to relax a little and get a little deeper. Sound (with subwoofer) - 5 stars. They really need a subwoofer and I'm glad they implemented it. There is presumably a crossover that initiates when the subwoofer is plugged in, but I didn't hear much difference, if any, when I unplugged and plugged the Edifiers subwoofer back in. Sound stage and picture - 5 stars. That's where these things really shine. The picture is accurate and the soundstage is deep and wide. There's an "enhanced" mode that can be toggled on, but it cuts off even more low frequencies, making the sound a lot brighter and adding a bit of reverb. It sounded ok in my home office, but in my work the console didn't match the added reverb. Also note that the subwoofer will need to be rebalanced when powered on. It works, but I find there's enough soundstage when it's off and I don't want to dial the subwoofer every time I use it. This will be great for some, but remember that results are highly dependent on room/wall conditions. BT - 5 stars - works and connects well and returns to pairing mode when previous device is disconnected. The remote control - 5 stars - works well and is the perfect size. These things are great for what they're made for, near-field listening. I could see them working - with a subwoofer - in an office or small room. They are excellent and in my experience unsurpassed in picture, soundstage and high frequencies. The mids are great too.
