Added once a week. For the first three months of use I went to clean the canister filter and was surprised to see almost no residue! There were usually many extensions. It made a big difference. Because of this and the improved biofilter, my aquarium is crystal clear. This stuff eats up all the sludge on your biofilter and improves its performance. These are NOT nitrifying bacteria to use as a quick start. This product will not cycle your tank. This simply reduces the maintenance effort and makes the fish healthier. Now I'm waiting 5-6 months for my two Fluval 406s to be cleaned. I have a 40g African cichlid aquarium which is very crowded and a dirty fish! Thanks API! Updated 10/18/2019. I just wanted to reiterate how happy I am with this supplement. I also notice that my nitrates are constantly close to zero and I get next to nothing from sucking gravel. (Just fresh big poop) I vacuumed up a cloud of dirt everywhere. I use carbon to make the water sparkle because I have driftwood trying to make it yellow, but the transparency of this material is crystal clear. And always my Fluval 407 (now) is almost free of debris and Biohome Ultimate is perfectly clean. I've briefly tried pristine seachem but this seems to be the best. The fish are very happy.
