As far as I can tell they are exactly the same as the ones in the box with the Mr. If you cut one in half you will see a layer of filter paper , then a layer of activated carbon felt (it powders the white sheet of paper like an aquarium filter material) and then another layer of paper. If you're using filtered brew water or cheap strong coffee, you might not even need it, but even then it keeps the coffee from splashing back onto the brew head. Since I use medium roast/medium grind tap water, I "think" that putting in a new filter will make a difference.
