Review on SC Johnson 70240 BUILDUP Remover by Jody Yarrish

A few times a year our kitchen drainpipe would get clogged, requiring the basement drainpipe to be opened up and cleaned. I literally followed the instructions for use on this scale remover and have used it on several other sinks as well. A few weeks later we had another clog and it was so bad I ended up having to call a plumber and even he had trouble opening the pipes. I noticed that some of the debris removed was a hard fat, like white soap bars, but very hard. I suspect it built up over a few decades and was removed rather than resolved by this blemish remover. I will no longer use this product due to this limitation. To avoid future clogs, I made some modifications to the horizontal drain so I could remove the sections that needed cleaning (cutting a section of PVC pipe and reattaching it with Fernco metal band couplers). The plumber recommended monthly hot water flushes and also told me how to replace the drain with a larger diameter pipe with a better vertical drop if I ever wanted to do it. So, a good product, but I want it to break down hydrogenated fat rather than dislodge it.
