After using all types of gravel and substrate I settled on this mix which I use in most of my aquariums. This is the perfect color and size for small aquariums (<30 gallons) as it blends in perfectly with any decor and is perfect for small fish. This gravel is very suitable for aquariums with plants and small fish species. Their corridors will appreciate the smaller size, making it easier for them to forage through forage without damaging their antennae. Planting in this gravel is very easy as plants slide in easily without damaging the roots and it is easy to fill around the stems for a secure hold. The sizes given (2-4mm) are accurate. So do NOT expect this to be the same size as the gravel you usually buy in the store. It is a smaller grain. However, it is large enough not to be sucked in during the siphon. If it is sucked in you will need to adjust the siphon inlet pressure. In addition to the size, the appearance of this gravel is particularly striking. It's a truly unique mix of colors and textures (although all stones have smooth edges) and the smaller size really helps give it a more natural look, especially if you're keeping fish under 3 inches. Small fish kept on larger gravel (even "regular" gravel) makes the fish look out of place and less natural in my opinion. While this gravel contains almost every color you can think of (white, red, gold, brown, black, gray), it is darker than most gravel mixes and is a taupe shade from a distance. This darker tone really brings out the color of most fish and the plants look great on this gravel. I would recommend this gravel to anyone with fish under 3 inches and aquariums under 30 gallons. Larger fish can accidentally swallow this gravel, so there is a risk if you use it on goldfish or larger cichlids, for example. It's a bit dusty, which is what you'd expect from almost any gravel, so rinse it out a few times before putting it in the tank. The water can be slightly cloudy no matter how many times you wash the gravel, but that should clear up in a day or two with proper filtration. A 22 pound bag is the ideal amount to fill a fully planted 20 gallon aquarium with about 1.5 inches of gravel, so you can use more or less depending on the size of the aquarium.
