. You can vacuum this filter, but I prefer to replace it. The only difference between them and the one that came with my device is that it doesn't have a directional arrow. They definitely have a front and a back. I remove the star because the manufacturer needs to take the time to stamp and arrow them. The front part can be recognized by the fact that it has a smooth surface that is slightly shiny. You can distinguish the front part by holding it up to the light. If you plan on vacuuming them, the plastic side should be facing out when installed. This smooth surface helps you vacuum the filter. If you only get rid of them every few months, I'm not sure it matters. The inner surface feels and looks more like paper. No shine. I received them at the same time as the air filter so I took photos of the original and the replacement so you can see they are the same size but without the arrow. Except for the arrow, they appear to be identical. They are also equipped with an activated carbon filter. I used one of the charcoal filters on my new unit because it didn't come with it. There is a plastic bar at the top and bottom to switch the filter. You can pull on them and they bend slightly so you can pull them out. They are simply inserted into side slits. The airflow actually holds the filter in place, but the stabilizer is just an extra guarantee that it will stay in place. I removed both to install a new filter, then a charcoal filter, then reinstalled the two plastic fins. Very easy, only took a minute or two. Thank you for reading my review, Becky Brooks.
