Money. The argument is that most photographers have (and need) 35mm primes, 50mm primes and probably 14-24mm and 70-200mm lenses. With these 4 lenses you cover all focal lengths from 14mm to 200mm - with high-quality 35mm and 50mm lenses. So what's the point of a 24-70mm lens? My answer? It just makes life easier. It is true that I have all 14-24mm, 70-200mm and high quality 35mm and 50mm prime lenses (both at f1.4). However, 90% of my photos are created with a focal length of 35-70mm. So with this lens I can easily meet most of my needs. Notes on Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. My main lens is the Zeiss Otus 55mm. Let's be clear that Nikon cannot replicate these results. However, the Nikon lens is no picnic and an acceptable compromise for many jobs. I can go from 35mm to 50mm in 2 seconds instead of a minute or two. The lens is fairly sharp throughout the frame. The predecessor was known to be razor sharp in the center, but the edges were softer. This version doesn't seem as sharp in the center, but falls off very slightly with distance. The color saturation is stable - the photos really stand out. although they lack the 3D effect you can get with some high quality prime lenses. The lens can support f2.8 at all focal lengths. Despite losing a few stops, he's still pretty fast. Image stabilization is very solid, especially at 24mm (where many lenses top out at f4.0). factual; You will return at least 1 stop. if not 2, the possibility of using slower shutter speeds. It has the best in-lens stabilization I've ever used. - Focusing. I sometimes have trouble with the lens-camera combo (I shot with the D850) to find focus. Not small. This thing will add volume to your setup. It's not bulky, but you don't want it to be bigger. Final Verdict. Yes, for many pros, Nikon 24-70 is a surplus lens, but it's a fact. it just makes life easier. I know it's hard for professionals to adjust, but the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E really doesn't force you to compromise. And honestly, when I leave the studio, I try to take as few lenses with me as possible. I have found that I take the vast majority of my photos with this lens. So who cares what the photo snobs say about it! :)
