Handles are strong and do not bend. Needed to scoop sugar against the sugar container. It must be strong so that the handle does not break. The handle is thick and self-insulating to keep the sugar from sticking to the measuring cup. If the sugar sticks, it needs to be rinsed off and air dried to measure out another scoop. So I use a cup of sugar per feeder. Rinse off stuck sugar and allow to air dry before use. So I use two scoops per 1/2 cup, or one cup per scoop. Then the sugar is poured into the feeder using a funnel. Another opportunity for sugar to stick.
