I just moved into a new house and the ethernet cable runs from my basement wiring closet to my office (4 'houses' actually). I didn't want to run a phone line because eventually POTS (plain old phone service) would die. However, my wife likes to use her phone at home for her business. This allowed me to connect my Fios phone line in the wiring closet to the ethernet jack on the patch panel connected to the office. I then plugged the other cable into the appropriate ethernet jack in my home office and the other end into the phone and an instant dial tone. In my last home I actually patched 4 of the 8 ethernet cables which means the connector needs to be re-patched to be used for ethernet. This solution is much more forward looking as it keeps my run patched to use ethernet if needed. Ideal!
