Review on πŸ”§ Fulton Precision Miter Gauge: Standard Slot (3/4” x 3/8”) Steel Bar, Adjustable Spring Loaded Plungers, Removable Retaining Disc by Jermaine Batista

Almost perfect design but could use improvement

If you are wondering what the difference is between this Fulton goniometer and the Big Horn 14600 - they are identical but I believe the Fulton one had original design (maybe it's $5 cheaper?). Also, subjectively, the Fulton head has a smoother and nicer finish, so that's it. Speaking of the underside, you need to wax it well or it will *leave* marks on the saw table, especially if it's aluminum (I'm less concerned with cast iron, steel, or coated tables). I wish there was a plastic strip underneath like the Incra, or better yet a disposable spare strip, which is basically the only improvement I can think of. Of course, if you're like me, you'll probably put a piece of delrin on the bottom just to make sure no tools are left intact in the workshop. I would also prefer the head to be cast and sanded. not stamped. I don't think it will add much to the cost (the finishes are already done). Finally, the ball head set screws that adjust the tightness of the slot must be screwed in, otherwise they will move too freely and become loose. back quickly. Even then, I think it's a better design than Incra's nylon discs. The reason for this is that the tracks on most saws are not very straight and the spring-loaded ball tips make up for the shortcomings very well. It could be argued that nylon washers can provide a tighter fit because you can *swing* the spring-loaded screws with pleasure as you turn them, but this comes at the cost of a smoother motion. And of course you can swap out the ball head set screws for nylon screws (which you can make yourself by cutting M6 nylon screws) and choose whichever you like best. Now if Fulton would add an interchangeable plastic head strap and a couple of nylon set screws they would have the perfect corner stop for any occasion!

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Good but not great
