Great value all round lens for the money

This is a great value and very versatile lens if you don't expect perfection. Not as sharp as lenses costing 3-4 times as much (big surprise), but still good enough for most hobbyists. I bought it as one of my vacation and travel lenses. I don't like to carry a bag and multiple lenses with me when I travel, but I needed a large zoom range at a low price. It fills the bill perfectly. I'm a bit disappointed with the telephoto aspect of this lens. My Tamron 75-300 gets subjects much closer than this lens's 300mm setup. I've tested both at maximum focal length on the same subjects, and the Tamron definitely captures much larger subjects. I'm not sure we're getting a full 300mm focal length here. I think it's really somewhere around 250mm (either that or Tamron really has more than 300mm). Still, overall I'm happy with the lens. It's relatively light and compact and has a great zoom ratio, although not as large as advertised. macro works fine. I wasn't disappointed with the image quality, although I would have liked a little sharper for professional shots. I'd like to edit my review to add that during a recent trip to the zoo (early 2011) the autofocus stalled when tracking the lens. unusable. Since it was still under warranty, I contacted Sigma. They instructed me where to send it for repair. Now he's like new. It's great to see that Sigma stands behind their products.
