Review on πŸ“„ Epson ES-200 Color Portable Document Scanner with ADF for PC and Mac: Sheet-fed and Duplex Scanning Capabilities by Jason Hayes

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great little scanner!

I bought this product because the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 cannot scan small documents (like book pages, A5, etc.) and I had a large archiving project that was out of stock. It's AMAZING and life saving. While I do have some downsides they aren't a deal breaker, it's just what I wish the machine could do for my workflow and budget. BENEFITS - Wow! It's very fast! Duplex scanning (both sides) of a 350-page book is completed in just a few minutes. The accuracy of OCR with the included software is amazing. There are very few issues to fix when scanning to searchable PDF. The design allows you to close the paper tray when not in use. This not only saves desk space in a small home office, but also prevents dust from getting onto the scanner glass, which is important for high-quality scanning. CONS - Epson ScanSmart software does not save the scan job after the export is complete. This means that unlike other scanning software such as ReadIRIS 17, HP Easy Scan, HP Smart or NAPS2, you can only export to one format at a time. Since many competitors save scanned jobs before exporting, Epson doesn't seem to be aware of this function. If you rearrange the pages and want to export again to a different format, you'll have to do all the scanning work again. Sometimes I want to export searchable Word and PDF text because you can actually get different results. - You cannot scan photos, they are too short. - Unreliable receipts are also sometimes difficult to register on the machine. - Unfortunately, if you are on a budget and don't have a wireless model, the ES-200 cannot be used as a network scanner by connecting it to a router (routers tested: ASUS AC86U and TP-Link AC2300). The Espon ScanSmart software on Mac OS works great, but it has an annoying permanent icon in the menu bar that warns you when the scanner is connected via USB. The setup was also bulkier and more cumbersome than the others, as it didn't use any of Bonjour's auto-detect-on-connect features.
