Wipe them first
Definitely not vegan! They are made from real animal bones, not plastic. Great value for money but be sure to wipe them down before first use. Mine were covered in what was definitely bone dust from the manufacturing process. They seemed very rough before I picked them up with a dry cloth, but once cleaned of edges and other areas that I will be using on paper they have become very smooth.
