We have spring water with 35 ppm iron. (That's about 100 times the allowable amount.) Our Culligan water softener, an ion exchange and neutralization system, works well and removes iron, except when the system periodically flushes itself back after midnight. Then a toilet flush fills the bowl with iron-rich water. When exposed to air, the colorless, soluble iron quickly oxidizes to insoluble, reddish-brown iron, which stains the container and bowl. Ironing tablets solve this problem very well and prevent stains on the bowl and tank. This happens automatically on reset. The product works well for us. (I'm a chemist. Please excuse the chemistry class.) JCK
