Review on πŸ“ Magellan RoadMate 1470: Reliable 4.7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator by Jyothish Pillai

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Nice for the price.

This is the first new GPS navigator I've bought since my Mio C310X a few years ago, which I've been happy with. Now that Mitac owns Magellan and after reading the reviews I decided to give the 1470 a try I was not disappointed. The RoadMate 1470 is as thin as it gets and has a screen that pleases my aging eyes and is viewable in almost any light. They changed the mounting system so that the power cord can be connected before it is placed in the mount. The lady's voice is clear and pronounces most street names well, but there's no language selection and you can't select a vehicle. You get an arrow. Entering an address is easy, even here in Utah with its unconventional numbering system. Usually you enter the city, then the street, then the address. With this device you have the option of first entering a number (e.g. 18N 2300E). That was almost impossible with the 310X. If you enter letters or numbers and the device has enough information, a selection pop-up will appear and part of the entry will be saved. There are some POIs (6 million? and information from the AAA Tour Book) that appear to have been recently updated. I haven't had any problems with the maps, although the latest version is called Spring 2009. Magellan now have software called Content Manager that will sync your PND to your computer and let you know of any updates, although the maps are available on Micro SD card only. Because the 1470 runs on Windows CE, many other programs such as MP3 or MP4 players, book readers, word processors, calculators, etc. can run with some "modifications" although they cannot be used. along with the map function. Since there is such a possibility, it seems strange to me that there is no headphone jack, so if I want to listen to music, then only through the speaker. the entire route at about 450 miles per hour. 1470 has multiple route options that you can view at once and select the one you want. You can also see written turn-by-turn directions, and if there's a stage you want to avoid, you can exclude it and the device will quickly reroute the route. Overall, this device has some great features for its price.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Broadly ok, but...
