Review on Nissin I40S Camera Flash Black by Chris Horton

Useful flash for Sony mirrorless cameras

I have had this flash for a year and a half. In A (auto) mode, this flash works with Sony mirrorless cameras. I'm not a big Flash user, but sometimes it comes in very handy. I have no problem using it as a reflective flash with a diffuser attachment. Overheating is not a problem with this flash. I fired about 60 test shots in a row at full power and the overheat protection never worked. The charging time was only a few seconds, so the battery life seems reasonable for light use. However, the flash got hot and the NiMH batteries were just about what I would call hot when I took them out. There is no way to connect an external power supply. So if you use it all day, it's best to have spare batteries handy. great experience with nikon flashes, they are very slim and solid in construction. In comparison, the Nissin feels fragile and not as refined. Due to the coarseness of some moving parts, it almost looks like a toy. The edges tend to be sharp, with some parts feeling loose and others tight. The mounting leg is the worst because it inspires confidence. It's plastic with sharp edges. It is so tight in the camera shoe that it looks like something will break during installation. To remove it, hold the release button while rocking the device slightly as you pull back. The large wheel is only slightly raised from the back of the device and has weak locks for each position. I urge you not to move it while installing/removing the flash. It should be thicker and clickier, rather than moving almost freely from one setting to another. The tilt and swivel mechanism does the job, but feels a bit noisy and doesn't work well. When adjusting, however, it always snaps into the correct position. The battery cover always looks like it's about to crack. It has an opening mechanism that pushes and slides the battery cover. Once again, it doesn't inspire confidence. The highlights pop-up card is good. The retractable jet diffuser is working properly. I had no problems with the zoom mechanism, it automatically moves back and forth to follow the lens. It's a silly feature to me, but everyone is doing it now. I love that there are no stupid latches to press to unlock the tilt and pan adjustments. The latches are strong enough to hold the head in place. Despite all the shortcomings I've pointed out, I can't deny that this flash still works well for me. It's small, light weight, but would be easier to carry if it could be folded.
