Yes, assembly is worthwhile. Yes, build wise it's like something IKEA and I've used it time and time again with a Bowers S mount in combination with a couple of Nikon flashes, although I usually attach it to a Wescott 200ws studio flash. The dual screen diffuses and softens the light for portraits. I don't know how to describe how well it works other than to say that if someone stole it I would buy it again. People look very beautiful in such a soft light, it's not harsh on the skin, no need to soften in post. My 24x24 softboxes work great, but the larger the SB size, the more even coverage you get when working. The best distance to the object seems to be no more than twice the diameter, which I think is the generally accepted rule of thumb. It fits in the back seat of my small car (too lazy to take it apart) so I can take it anywhere. It's not cheap, and if you google it, you'll find that even dispersion softboxes are relatively expensive. This softbox doesn't show a hotspot in any of the photos I took, and if there was one I would give it a one star rating. I will buy the same in 120cm for family portraits at home. If you don't have a softbox and want to use it with a flash or studio flash, that's fine.
