Review on Supco SET184 Thermal Cutoff Kit: Reliable Overheat Protection for Appliances by Aaron Shaw

Overheat protection blew within a WEEK

Our Kenmore dryer died after many years of excellent performance with minimal problems (had to replace the heating element about 3 years ago but that's it). I checked the element, the thermostat and the thermal fuse with a multimeter and it turned out that the fuse was the culprit. I went online to the Kenmore Parts Direct website and dug up the part number for the replacement. Parts Direct was over $30 a cut, so I went to Revain. Wow, I found many, MANY sources for the part number I needed, most of them pretty damn cheap, AND with a thermostat, all for about a third of what was ONE limit at Parts Direct. Well, there's a reason for the difference in cost, as you can see from the lifespan the initial shutdown gave us (nearly 20 years) versus the time we should be happy about a replacement (6 days). Luckily I bought a "replacement" kit without knowing it from the same seller for $2 more than what I paid for that kit as it included an FSP package. Guess what? It is also a generic product made in China and not packaged by FSP. This is in my dryer at the moment, hopefully it lasts a long time. We will see.

Pros
  • Single fuse
Cons
  • No instructions
