Direct drive Gemini TT4000 parallel test with Audio Technica ATLP 60 USBAmp: OnkyoSpeakers: KlipschWELL! A direct drive turntable is a beauty and the Gemini TT4000 is a masterpiece of solid construction and good engineering. Built like a "DJ" turntable, it has a solid aluminum body that's exactly the same depth as the more compact Audio Technica turntable, but is wider to adjust pitch, and two notched "knobs" on the bottom for easy Wear. If you're playing at a party, the Gemini wins exactly: three speeds when you're revving 78 rpm, and to my old rock 'n' roll ears, a little acceleration sounds good on my records. The Gemini is LOUDDER than the Audio Technica belt drive and the response is really noticeable for punchy tones and low end. I tested four albums: The Repressing LET IT BLEED, NUGGETS of the Underground, Best of the Moody Blues, and Mono Paul Revere. and Raider hits. I have selected tracks to carefully listen to. Audio Technica delivers consistent sound but requires higher volume to match Gemini's higher volume, but Audio Technica certainly doesn't match Gemini's overall best, overall rich sound, period. Gemini has balance controls to balance the arm precisely, which can leave anyone under 50 in the dark, but at $25 a record you want them to play in full, and again Gemini uses a very good stylus. Gemini operates on 115V compared to Audio Technica on 110V which may affect playback; If you live in a small town like us, performance can ruin your deck. In the case of a belt drive I swapped out turntables to find a decent one that had no issues and the Audio Technica was a good buy. GEMINI direct drive is the Porsche for the Corolla AT. Even the Gemini feet are vibration and shock resistant: They can vibrate: SMART! Worse, the Audio Technica line uses those pathetic rubber bands that are promised to be crap in 4 years. Two steps below THESE straps is the Ion with a turntable that was a blast but straps that require a chase as the platter is adjusted; a la Gemini TT4000 with direct drive does not let the listener down. WINNER: For the audiophile or bragging rights at home, Gemini gives a Mike Tyson punch. GREAT sound, choice of preamp or not, adjustable pitch and solid metal base. Will I use it to go digital? For some rare Korean War audio recordings and WWII home recordings, yes. For a few rare 78s, yes. For records? No, but if I did they would be great. Two problems: Gemini has NO COATING due to dust (come on Gemini! Sell me one that fits!) Gemini could handle an automatic arm; Sorry but I bet most users don't play the hall. Gemini could benefit from the addition of automatic arm lowering and returning. I'm old enough to remember the good hi-fi of 1953 that had record-breaking revenues, and for those after that it all worked. Where did you go? I loved stacking records; But for a great killer turntable of 2021, I'm happy to go over to Gemini.
