I have a similar old aluminum cheese cutter. It worked fine, but this one is much stronger; it appears to be made of steel. It's actually a bit heavier, although the handle could have been a bit longer for a better grip; If you have very large hands this can be a little tricky. I've used this on a standard sized gourmet block of cheese and it works well enough, but it might be a wider bet. All the slicers I've seen could be a bit wider, so it's no worse than the others in that regard. Two extra cutting wires (including brass tips on the ends for fastening) are good to have just in case, although I never broke a wire on my previous one. If I did I would probably have to throw it away as changing the cord seems extremely difficult even if I had an extra one. This is a clear step forward.
