Purchased this item to level and install a pool. So from my benchmark I needed a maximum of 30 feet. However, in the sun I could only see him at a distance of 6 or 7 feet. I thought the batteries might be dead so I put new ones in. Thought it might be the mode I'm using. no change in any mode. I thought maybe one axis takes energy from the other, so I turned off the vertical. Without change. I can't say it doesn't work because it does, but if you plan on using it outside. I wouldn't care. The inside could be a different story and that's probably where the great reviews come from. Really disappointed and sad I bought a tripod to walk around with. Hope this works for you.
