Every time I change my fridge's water filter, I have to run water through to rinse out the charcoal. I understand there's dust, but the amount of dust coming out of this filter was unbelievable. We've owned this GE refrigerator for 17 years. I change the MWF filter every 6-12 months. I've never seen water this dark. It was pretty disgusting. Took a lot of water to finally make it run clear. On the plus side: It fits, it doesn't leak, and it works once it's clean. At least I think it does. I haven't sent the water out for testing.P.S. I wouldn't come down so hard on this company for not getting the NSF certification. That certification can cost up to $100,000 for the first year alone, plus renewal fees -- a princely sum for smaller companies. They apparently got testing for their product and it passed, which means it would have been certified had they paid more money. Of course, certification might mean they get occasional random inspections of the factory; but as I was told by a friend of mine in the business, those visits don't include any testing of the products themselves, just visual inspection of how the products are assembled.
