Sponge filters provide optimal filtration and water flow for fish and invertebrates that require low water flow and are small enough to be sucked into traditional mounted filters and canister filters to become. A fine sponge is also great for picking up dirt and food debris that fish and shrimp can feast on. Sponge filters are notoriously large, bulky and can stand out in most aquariums as they are usually a giant black (or green) sponge with a large weighted base that is often very difficult to conceal. The product has one advantage over conventional foam filters: it sticks to the back wall of the aquarium. This frees up valuable space for decoration or planting. It also makes it easier to hide the sponge filter/gear by painting the back wall of the tank (outside) with black plastidip and using black air hoses. Voila, the focus is now on your plants, fish, shrimp, etc. I've included photos of my tanks (10 gallon and 20 long) to show how easy it is to hide the filters.
