Review on Enhanced E4200 v2 Router: Linksys Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 by Reza Cook

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Short range and difficult to set up

This N series wireless router replaced the Linksys WRTG54. I should have kept the old one as it had more range and was easier to understand and tweak. This new gadget uses a "cloud" interface and automates many settings. I'm not an engineer or even particularly knowledgeable, but I can read instructions and test different settings. I spent about an hour and a half with tech support from the Philippines to get the wireless connection working. Everything worked for me out of the box, but suddenly it stopped. The woman connected to my network and computers and changed some settings. I want to understand what is being done and why. This modem has a range of 35 to 50 feet in my house. It does not reach level 2 and the opposite side of the house (about 100 feet). It was recommended to buy a range extender for another $90. However, there is no guarantee that it will be enough to cover all areas. There is a review by a Cisco engineer that makes a lot of suggestions - mainly to buy Netgear. Sounds like great advice. I cannot recommend this router. **UPDATE** I finally measured the range - it doesn't exceed 35 feet in my home. I was very impressed and replied to the email with a preferred time that they could call me to resolve any issues. Gee - I'm sooooo naive. No, they didn't call at the requested time. However, they called a few days after dinner and left a message. I have called this number several times only to be left on hold for an extended period of time. There is an offer to leave a message and they"call back". Needless to say, in over 4 weeks of back and forth calls I still haven't spoken to anyone. I should have returned this POS sooner. Maybe I would get back the $170 I paid for it.

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Long delivery time
