Although not very strong, it usually holds folding chairs. Not sure I would bet more than a kids bike on it. However, I had to tie it to the ladder at the four corners to keep it in place. One problem and the reason I removed the star is that unless you REALLY hang it high on the stairs you'll bang your head on it. I have done this several times as it is very thin and difficult to see in low light. And it's smart. Next time I'll wrap it with protective tape to get my attention.
