It definitely works but the sound quality is very poor even with high quality electret condenser microphones. I was hoping I could get decent sound for podcasts and quick instrumental recordings with external mics. The built-in microphone sounds better. I've tried Sony, Olympus and Rhode electret capsules and all had lots of noise, which is not typical of any of these mics, even through a barely passable preamp. I was sure that a direct A/D input would sound better than a phone mic, but it doesn't.
