I moved to my apartment where we do NOT smoke.

I moved into my non-smoking apartment, but the previous person did the same to one or more neighbors. We still smell of smoke even after the purchase. What helped me the most was airing the apartment every morning and evening, using an air filter, and washing the walls and floors with vinegar to absorb more stench. I still use them, although they might help, but I didn't notice that the smell suddenly disappeared.
