ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 5 Tier Black Metal Bookcase

0. UNLOAD THE SCREWS ON A LIGHT DUST CLOTH in a small pile so you know where they are. Unpack the parts.1. INSERT LOWER SIDE HALF INTO UPPER HALF for both sides a. Define the parts: The top halves are U-shaped. The lower halves are H-shaped. Every detail is ASYMMETRICAL. The back of the top half of the U is LONGER and has 5 holes because it's the back. IMPORTANT, the back of the bottom half H HAS 6 HOLES because it is BACK and the FRONT post only has 4 holes. in this. The two sides are DIFFERENT. There are more holes on the back of the H than on the front. b. Insert the bottom half into the top half so both backs are on the same side. This is actually the hardest part of the whole build because the tolerances are so tight. Lay the top half on the floor with the longer 5-hole back facing to the right. Place the H on the floor directly underneath, facing down, with the top holes up and the non-holed legs down. MAKE SURE THE BACK WITH THE BIG HOLE IS ON THE RIGHT. Get it wrong and you'll have to disassemble and reassemble your bookshelf or live without a support stand, and either way you'll be frustrated. Note that the front half of the H has an extra hole at the top that's never used, just to confuse you. It should be empty, but it isn't. But you're smart enough not to fall for it. Slide the bottom half up until its top touches the lower U-posts where it will be inserted. IN THIS STEP, IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP H *ACCURATELY* STRAIGHT, PARALLEL TO U. IF IT IS OFF EVEN HALF A DEGREE, IT WILL BE CONNECTED. That's why you do it on level ground. Now you only need to insert one side of the needle a hair, just a millimeter, until it's ONLY inside. You'll feel like you want to push it in by half an inch so it's already in the hole. But if you do, the H already doesn't quite line up with the U, and you'll NEVER use another rack. You ONLY need to stick it ON THE HAIR inside so it will hook when you insert the other pin. You can then slide them together so that the H is PERFECTLY STRAIGHT on top of the U. Because the tolerances are so tight, you may have to grab the top post at this point and use some force to get it just over the U. The bottom post . Again, it is very important that they are PERFECTLY STRAIGHT and aligned or the assembly will bind. After inserting the left and right posts, if you cannot slide the top end down 1 inch to complete the insertion, you may need to stand the assembly upright and give the top end a little tap or pull again. on both sides at the same time so that it is COMPLETELY STRAIGHT so the top part falls completely onto the bottom half. Stand the assembly upright against the wall while repeating this and do it on the other side. The parts are identical, so there is no difference between the two sides of the bookshelf. Again, make sure you have MORE HOLES on the BACK with the longer U-leg. Note that while this insert is the trickiest part, sometimes when you can try to lift this assembly by the top half, the bottom half spontaneously falls out and you have to repeat this step again. So be sure to hold this assembly by the bottom half. .3. SCREW THE CROSSBAR TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOOKSCALE. The shelf has three crossbars: one at the front, one at the back and one raised at the back to prevent books from falling out at the back. Lean the left side against the wall and insert the screw into the hole. While holding the screw with your left hand, screw the strut onto it while rotating the strut with your right hand. Now just tighten it with your fingers. Do this for all 15 holes on the left. The posts should hang down to the right like a porcupine. Tilt the side while leaning it against the wall to keep it from falling over while doing this step.4. INSERT SOME SCREWS TO HOLD THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOOKSCALE IN POSITION. Lift the right side of the bookshelf, hold it upright and insert it. Orient the left side unit so that it is vertical and all spacers are horizontal. Align two of these and finger tighten, maybe one screw on top, maybe one screw on bottom, maybe one in middle just to hold them in place. This one is NOT perfect, you only have to twist the bolt a turn or two for it to stick out but not fall out. Sometimes it's good to put a bolt or two in your shirt pocket before you start. If you're good at it, you can do this by holding the assembly and the right side with your left hand while your right hand inserts a screw or two. If you feel bad, bend down, crawl into the assembly and support the uprights with your back while using your left hand to position the right side and your right hand to tighten the screws. At this point you have a wobbly right side that barely hangs, attached with a couple of screws, but the shelf stands upright. INSERT ALL BOLTS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE Insert all bolts by tightening the bolt with your right hand and holding the Upright with your left hand. Just paste them back in. When you have completed this step, check and make sure ALL the spacers are in place. Often you will miss one or two just hanging around. THERE IS AN EXTRA SCREW for good luck. You should have ONLY ONE EXTRA SCREW. If you have more, you've almost certainly missed the rack. Come back and check again.6. Tighten ALL BOLTS ON THE RIGHT SIDE hand tight with the Allen key and turn with index finger while riding. It's like putting it to your ear and making the American "This Guy's Crazy" sign.7. TIGHTEN ALL BOLTS With an Allen key. The hex wrenches are intentionally made small so you don't have to use a lot of force. Do not over-tighten or over-crimp the metal. Ideally, the head of the screw should be roughly level with the post, but some of them may stick out a hair. LOCK THE SHELVES Start at the bottom and work your way up so if you fumble around and drop them they don't fall all the way down. Slide the back edge of the shelf onto the rear rack. Pull gently to snap the leading edge over the A-pillar. There is nothing to snap on the sides.9. LIFT THE BOOKSHELF AND DISPLAY IT FROM THE WALL. The bookshelf is about 2 feet wide and about 5 feet high. It's light enough for anyone to move. Assembly takes about 40 minutes. Good value for money.
