Review on 🎧 Rode Mini-Jack Female to XLR Male Adapter: Enhance Audio Quality with VideoMic (VXLR)" by Linda Smith

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent electrical performance but mechanical issues.

Works well but has mechanical problems. I haven't found a simple adapter like this with the same good electrical performance - most others have ground loop problems, poor shielding, or just can't pass phantom power properly. It's a shame Rode lowered the price on the connector mechanics, otherwise it's a VERY well made, compact product that will work with mic systems that may or may not require phantom power. . Holding the mic/cable firmly on the table always worked well, but I got static with almost every movement. What's really nice is the adapter's ability to connect to a mic that has its own internal battery or if I had mics that required phantom power from my recorder. Unfortunately, the mechanics need to be improved for 100% reliability. I hooked it up to my Tascam DR40 recorder and used 4 different mono mics - 1 JK lavalier mic, 1 AT lavalier mic, 1 AT shotgun mic, 1 vintage dynamic computer mic from an old HP computer. . They all had a noisy electrical connection from the 3.5mm plug to the adapter. I could spin or pull the fork and get constantly static a lot more than seemed reasonable. I was able to connect the same mics to my Sony RX10ii camera either directly or via a mono to stereo adapter and NEVER had a problem connecting directly to my camera. It looks like there is not enough contact area on one of the ring terminals in the adapter.

Pros
  • Pleasing
Cons
  • Mostly good but...
