Burns my very tolerant facial skin, high pH

I have tried to use this over moisturizer several times and it is really painful… my face doesn’t get red, but it BURNS as soon as I start applying it and doesn’t go away for a long time. I have extremely tolerant ‘normal’ skin, no skin conditions, and no allergies; I have been using mineral sunscreens for over a decade and this has never happened to me before. Babo’s FAQ says that they pH balance their products for skin so I bought it despite my concerns that they didn’t list specific product pH levels or a pH range, but I pH tested it after experiencing the burning effect and it has a very alkaline pH (which is bad for skin and damages the skin barrier) closer to soap (though my skin can tolerate soap just fine). I really wanted to love this and had ignored other reviewers saying that it burned their face, thinking they must just have sensitive skin. The ingredients list looked non-offensive from what I recall, so I can only assume the burning has to do with the product’s ridiculously high pH, which they’ve probably done because it makes mineral sunscreens test better so they can slap a higher SPF rating on the bottle. After trying to use it again today, it burned so much I just washed my face, re-moisturized, and used one of my favorites (Biossance) instead… it still took a good 10 mins for the burning to go away. Gotta return this one.

Pros
  • Does not leave a white cast on the skin
Cons
  • May not provide enough protection during extended sun exposure
